If there’s one thing that never goes out of style, it’s beautiful skin! You don’t need to be in your twenties to have a great complexion. Skin looks beautiful at all ages when it’s healthy, clear, and hydrated. But in order to achieve that, you need to ensure you are applying your skin care products properly. Otherwise, you might end up applying too much product, and that can cause oiliness, and clogged, congested pores.
The first step to glowing, healthy skin is to use products with good quality ingredients. It’s not rocket science, and I suspect if you are on this website you already know that. But I always feel it’s good to remind you that what you put ON your body is just as important as what you put IN your body. Read > Top 8 Foods For Glowing Skin
First, look for Certified Food Grade ingredients on your skin care labels. Food grade ingredients are the highest quality available when it comes to cosmetics, even if they are not organic. Obviously, organic + food grade is the gold standard.
A conventional jar of face cream is around 95-98% water.”
Don’t waste your money on water-based products! As a natural skin care formulator, I can tell you right now that adding water isn’t necessary and it’s a cheeky way of “padding-out” a formula to make it cheaper. Adding water to products also creates the need for alcohol, glycerin and controversial preservatives (parabens, etc.). A conventional jar of face cream is around 95-98% water. Disappointing, right?
Now, you might be thinking that waterless products are to heavy for your skin type. Actually, you’d be right if you are under 25 years old. At that age all you need is a splash of water and a gentle breeze, hahaha! Actually, waterless serums and moisturisers can be overly rich and heavy, even downright greasy if you don’t apply them properly. (Keep reading to find out how)
Which skin care products give you the best results?
Facial oils and serums are an incredible option for getting dewy skin right out of the gate. These waterless formulas don’t contain any drying ingredients, like alcohol, and they are self-preserving. That means that they don’t require a ga-jillion (technical term) preservatives to keep them fresh. Facial oils are wonderful for all skin types, since they tend use specific oils that are tailored to the needs of normal, dry and oily skin. They are also a fabulous option for Vegans, since they are usually plant-based.
How to use skin care products properly in the summer
In warmer months, you might find that you don’t need a daytime moisturiser, and that a face serum is hydrating enough. Even if all you need are a few drops of serum in the morning, don’t skip your moisturiser altogether. Just apply it before bed instead – kind of like a hydration mask. Your skin loses moisture while you sleep, and product rubs off onto your pillow. So, always make sure you use good night cream, and make sure to pay extra attention to your neck and the delicate area around your eyes.
How to apply face oils and serums
Here’s the Secret: ALWAYS apply your oils and serums to damp skin. Never put a waterless product straight onto dry skin. It will soak up 5 times too much product, and within an hour you’ll be oily-galore.
Apply face serums sparingly; remember, these are concentrated and are not meant to be applied the same way as a water-based product. A few drops is all you need, and start with the driest parts of your face first. (Read > How To Get The Most Out Of Your Facial Oil)
How To apply waterless face moisturiser
If you’re a concentrated facial moisturiser to freshly cleaned skin, follow the same rules; always apply onto damp skin. Use a very small amount, and by that I mean a pea-size. Again, start with the driest parts of your face and neck first.
How to Layer a face oil/serum with your moisturiser
If you are layering a moisturiser over a serum, it is very important to give your skin a few minutes to fully absorb the face serum first. If you don’t, you won’t really know how much moisturiser you need and you’ll risk over applying it. When you apply the moisturiser over a serum, you don’t need to dampen your skin again.
